United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED) is the UAE's official currency, divided into 100 fils. Banknotes are 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500, and 1000, while coins are 5, 10, 25, 50 fils, and 1 Dirham.
Introduced in 1973, it replaced the Qatar and Dubai Riyal and Gulf Rupee. It was not circulated in Abu Dhabi before the UAE Dirham issuance.
"Dirham" comes from the Arabic dirham, used in trade since the Ottoman Empire.
