The Djiboutian franc is the official currency of Djibouti. One Djiboutian franc is divided into 100 cents. Banknotes are available in denominations of 1000, 2000, 5000, and 10,000 francs, along with a commemorative 40 franc note. Coins are issued in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 250, and 500 franc values.
The franc was established in 1884 under the French Somaliland Protectorate. From 1908, Djiboutian francs were legally pegged to the value of the French franc. In 1948 and 1949, Djibouti began minting its own coins, making the Djiboutian franc an independent legal currency.
After World War I, the value of the French franc significantly decreased, leading to the issuance of 500 and 1000 franc banknotes in Djibouti. However, after World War II, as the economy recovered, the 500 franc note was replaced with a coin.
