The Indonesian rupiah is the official currency of Indonesia. It is divided into 100 sen. Banknotes are available in denominations of 1000, 2000, 5000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000, 75,000, and 100,000 rupiah, while coins are in 100, 200, 500, and 1000 rupiah.
The rupiah was introduced in 1945 during the war for independence. At that time, Dutch gulden and Japanese occupation-issued rupiah were also in circulation. By 1949, the Indonesian rupiah fully replaced other currencies.
In 1965, due to high inflation, a new rupiah was issued at a rate of 1 to 1000, making it the dominant currency in neighboring regions.
