The Yemeni rial is the official currency of Yemen. One Yemeni rial is divided into 100 fils. Banknotes are available in denominations of 50, 100, 200, 250, 500, and 1000 rials, while coins are in 1, 5, 10, and 20 rials. Although the rial is officially divided into fils, they are no longer in use since the unification of Yemen.
The Yemeni rial became an independent currency in 1990 after prolonged protests and conflicts with French traders. Until 1993, the dinar also circulated, but after Yemen's unification, the Central Bank of Yemen took control of currency issuance, making the rial the sole and independent currency.
During Yemen's unification, a large amount of rubles were in circulation. In 1993, all rubles were replaced by rial coins, which were later replaced by banknotes in 1995.
